Laura Nagel stars for Napier Harriers at North Island Cross County Champs in Taupo
Napier Harriers made an impression at the North Island Cross Country Champs on Saturday with Napier’s Laura Nagel taking out the women’s 5k race in her first outing since recently returning from USA after completing her Masters Degree.
Laura took command of the race from the start and led throughout to comfortably win in 17m 53s from North Harbours Ashleigh Williams who did 18m 11s followed by Jean Kozyniak of Whakatane in 18m 16s.
Held in brilliant sunshine and great running conditions Laura’s run augers well for a great race at the National Cross Country Champs in Auckland in August.
Another to shine from Napier at the other end of the age scale was Aniela Apperley who ran a well judged race to finish in 2nd place in the Girls 12 and under race over the 2k distance in 7m 49s with club mate Stella Marshall claiming 9th position.
Not to be outdone in the boys section Ollie Marshall also judged his race to perfection to also finish 2nd in the Boys 14 and under grade in 10m 20s for the 3k distance. Ollie turned the tables on his club mate Mitchell Snell who finished in 4th position in 10m 26s. These two consistently perform and provide each other with very strong competition.
Steve Lindsay gained a meritorious 4th placing in the Master’s Mens 60 plus grade over 6k, and another Napier Harrier to place 4th was Claudia Layton in the ladies under 20 grade over 4k in 17m 23s.
The last race of the day saw the senior men race over 9k with Napier’s Lucas Duross running very well in his first attempt at this race in Taupo to finish in 10th place in 30m 38s with club mate Kristian Day following closely behind all the way in 11th place in 30m 54s. The senior men’s race was won by Auckland’s Jono Jackson in 18m 51s followed by Peter Wheeler in 29m 06s and 3rd going to Harry Ewing in 29m 19s.
With the local cross country provincials coming up in Gisborne on 16 July there should be some great racing to look forward to.
