Green Shield Relay – June 2013
This year's Green Shield Relay was held at Park Island on a bitterly cold winters day. We had 60 hardy Harriers turn out to race in the relay as well as some very brave cubs.
The relay consists of four team members where the first and third runners complete 2 x 2km laps of the course and the second and fourth runners complete 1 x 2km lap. Conditions were freezing cold southerly winds, drizzle at times and muddy under foot in places.
Fifteen fairly even teams competed in the relay with around 7 minutes separating the teams at the end.
On the first 4k lap Christian Leopard of Team 1 led from start to finish with a time of 13m 45s, next in was Kristian Day in 14m 16s followed by Toa Elphick-Iaveta in 14m 57s.
Lap 2 unfolded with the front running team order changing with Angela Bassick coming in first to give Team 2 the lead. The fastest lap time on this leg went to Jonathon Moore in 10m 04s.
A great run by Tony Snell in lap 3 saw Team 1 consisting of Christian Leopard, Danielle Stephenson, Tony Snell and Dylan Barron regain the lead which they would hold onto till the end. The fastest time for lap 3 went to Steve Charles in 16m.
On the fourth lap the fastest lap time went to Dylan Barron in 7m 57s to ensure that his team held onto 1st place in a winning time of 54m 04s.
There were some interesting family match ups in various laps of the race and when the results were given out at the club there were some interested families comparing times with each other.
