Tutaekuri River Relay – April 2013
After our Indian Summer the first cold snap of winter arrived on Friday, with heavy rain showers on Saturday morning, luckily the rain kept away until the end of the run. Due to the long dry summer we were able to cross the river for the first time in a couple of years.
The relay consists of four team members where the first runner (14 years and under) runs a 2k lap with the next three all running the 4k lap and crossing the river just before the end of the lap.
Despite the inclement weather a good turn-out of 48 relay runners meant that twelve fairly even teams competed with a good number of new members taking part and team positions changing numerous times. Only 5min separated all 12 teams at the end.
On the first 2k lap Joshua Keating ran a very well judged lap to put his team into first place in 6m 14s followed by Oliver Marshall in 6m 32s and Max Taylor coming in 3rd in 6m 33s.
Lap 2 unfolded with the front running team order changing with Marilyn Brown running a great lap to bring her team up from 3rd to 1st in a very good 19m 51s, the fastest time on this leg went to Corinna Alexander in 19m 08s to bring her team from 9th to 2nd.
Lap 3 saw the team of Joshua Keating, Kim Creagh, Dylan Barron and Christopher Wong regain a very handy lead which they would hold onto until the end thanks to a great run by Dylan Barron in 17m 34s. The fastest run on lap 3 went to Robert Strong in 17m 29s and brought his team up from 11th to 4th.
On the fourth lap the fastest lap time and also fastest for the day was Toa Elphick-Iaveta's team who stormed home from 9th to 4th in 14m 34s. Christopher Wong's team held onto their lead to win in a time of 1h 3m 22s, followed by Karl Ivaeta's team 15s back in 2nd place and Shane Bassick's team 34s back in 3rd place.
Due to the large number of 12 and under runners a separate 2k race was held for those 15 runners not in a relay team. 8 year old Liam Alexander took out this race in a time of 7m 12s, followed by Tyler Annand in 7m 27s and Ethan Green in 7m 30s. This run did not involve a river crossing but it was amazing how many runners accidentally fell in the river either during or after the race.
The Cubs race of 1k saw 8 youngsters from 6-8 years old race off round their circuit with Nathan Stone placing first in 5m 39s followed by Milla Green 2nd in 5m 40s and Holly Gee 3rd in 5m 42s.
This relay will give the club handicappers a good indication of form for the first big local cross country race on Sat 13 April at the Mission Estate where an interclub with Hastings Harriers will take place at 2pm.
